You may have seen “EEG” mentioned in sleep tracking products. But what does it actually mean?
EEG stands for electroencephalography—a method of recording the brain’s electrical activity. The resulting recording is called an electroencephalogram. It helps reveal patterns in brain activity, including changes that happen during sleep. Learn more about EEG from NINDS.
How Does EEG Work?
Brain cells communicate through electrical signals. Small sensors called electrodes, placed against the scalp, detect this activity. Recording equipment turns the signals into wave-like patterns.
These patterns are commonly called brainwaves. Their speed and shape change with different states of alertness and sleep. MedlinePlus explains how EEG records these signals.
What Can Brainwaves Tell Us About Sleep?
Your brain stays active while you sleep, and its activity changes throughout the night.
Deep non-REM sleep includes prominent slow waves. During REM sleep, brain activity can look more similar to waking activity. These differences help specialists distinguish sleep stages. See the American Epilepsy Society’s guide to normal EEG patterns.
EEG therefore provides information about how sleep changes, beyond simply recording how long you spend in bed.
Is an EEG Sleep Mask the Same as a Sleep Study?
A clinical sleep study combines brainwave recordings with other measurements, including eye movements, muscle activity and breathing. Specialists assess this information together. NINDS describes what a sleep study measures.
A consumer EEG sleep mask offers a simpler way to explore sleep patterns at home. Its sleep-stage reports should be understood as estimates, rather than a medical diagnosis.
How SleepSense Pro Uses EEG
The MUSICOZY SleepSense Pro uses built-in electrodes that contact your forehead to collect sleep-related EEG signals. After your sleep session, reconnect the mask to its companion app to view sleep-stage charts and analyzed results.
Bluetooth audio is a separate feature, letting you play music, podcasts or other compatible audio while wearing the mask.
SleepSense Pro is designed for everyday sleep insights and relaxation. It is not a medical device or a replacement for a clinical sleep study.
